Friends and Food..

“ Don’t worry about friends. Believe me, they don’t worry about you. They just worry about getting a bigger share of your food.” Maus ll, Vladek, PG. 56 I think this quote means that people in Auschwitz and in other concentration camps cared more about food than friends because food was the thing they needed the most. Some people in camps don’t really care about friends as much as they care about food. I found in one of my resources that belongings and food were both on top of a Pyramid of Survival. Which means that food is one of the biggest things that you need for survival. My reaction to this was that I totally agree with Vladek on how he explains food is needed to survive. Food was amongst the most important things in camps/ghettos. This event could be also related to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. According to Google,”His theories parallel many other theories of human development Psychology, some of which focus on describing the stages of growth in humans. Maslow used the terms Physiological, Safety, Belongingness and Love, Esteem, Self-Actualization and Self-Transcendence needs to describe the pattern that human motivations generally move through.” Vladek said this when he was working on someone's roof and trying to be some sort of tiles on it. Another job of the horrible camp of Auschwitz. I would relate this to all parts of the ghetto where everyone was crowded. I would connect this to survival because its basically surviving a living nightmare. Friends and food were rare, just like the chances of surviving the camps. Reason being is that it was such a hard life in the ghetto too, but it was much harder to find food. So many children smuggled their way out to go find some food, even it was even a piece of bread the children still went out to get some sort of food. The children smuggling out was dangerous because of the consequences they had or risk if they were caught. .

  1. Anthony,

Isn't it interesting how easy it is to see Maslow's pyramid at work in extreme situations like the ocncentration camps and ghettos? Most of the itme we feel so safe that we lose sight of food and safety as needs, but the other needs still move us. Which of the Maslow needs can you see operating in yourself? How about in your classmates? Where does tolerance fit in? I think this is a very interesting way to to look at life around us, don't you?

  2. You made some very good points in this blog post. In my opinion it's scary to think you have to fight for your food, and not really care about anyone but yourself and survival. You have to worry about where and when your next meal will be, and if you'll even have a next meal. It is horrible to think how we get our food so easily we don't really think about it. All they thought about was their food and how to get it to survive. It's horrible but true that food and friends were very rare. Food is our number one needed thing to survive in life. I can't image that it's something these people had dreamed of having. It was not a big fancy meal they thought about. It was a pieces of bread or even some scraps of food. Food is something we just need and it should not be taken away form us.

  3. I completely agree because the Nazis did start to take away their food and things they needed most. They did this by minimizing food rations, elongating work sessions, and shooting some of them. This brought pain both physically and mentally to the Jews and also brought anxiousness about when their next meals or work sessions will be. In addition to the minimizations they began to kill them in larger numbers day in and day out. Almost by the dozens.

  4. I think you made a good point that some people will just try to eat their food just to survive in a way. I also believe that they wanted friends or someone to talk to because they didn't have a family any more. Some people just wanted to rely on someone. I think it is very sad on how they made them suffer by not giving them food, and some of them would kill just for food. They have nobody to rely on to be friends or anything because they can't trust anyone, but sometimes they need a friend to have faith in. I also like how you said," I would connect this to survival because its basically surviving a living nightmare". I think that's the perfect connection because not only was it a nightmare, but it was real. sometimes people can't recover from nightmares. Good job I really like your post.
